The future world of work is such a fascinating subject. It seems to me that nearly every week there is a new article inciting fear that we will lose all possible job opportunities to robots, and that the future can only be seen as a bleak and disaster ridden place. Just because we don’t know exactly what is coming, doesn’t mean we should fear it. Imagine describing our current understanding and expectations of work to a tithe bound farmer in the pre-industrialised world. It would be unfathomable, and yet here we are, trying to make sense of what the future holds for us, our children and our grandchildren.

To me it’s exciting. There is great scope to lose the mundane aspects of work and be freed up to be truly creative. There is also an ever-expanding set of new opportunities that will appear as the world evolves. Deakin & Griffith Universities recently partnered with Ford Australia to explore what future job opportunities might look like, and have released 100 Jobs of the Future. There is some truly exciting and mind-boggling potential jobs coming our way if we are prepared to be open-minded. There are also some much more relatable roles that are expected to be sustained. My pick - Cyborg Psychologist. I’m excited to see what roles my children will embrace throughout their lives. There are a couple of core skills I know will stand them in good stead regardless of the directions they take - adaptability and inquisitiveness.
